Bore sighting

Start on target. Finish with live fire.

Preliminary optic alignment designed to create a practical first-shot starting point before final zeroing with ammunition.

A starting point—not a final zero

Bore alignment helps organize the first range group.

Bore sighting relates the barrel axis and sighting system without firing, helping reduce large initial error before live ammunition is used.

It cannot account for ammunition trajectory, barrel behavior, optic tracking, shooter input, or the final distance-specific point of impact.

Pre-zero alignment

Efficient range preparation

Use bore sighting to begin the zero—not replace it.

A bore-sighted firearm should have a more practical starting relationship between the bore and optic than an unaligned installation.

The result remains preliminary. Range 313 can discuss the correct next live-fire service based on firearm, optic, ammunition, intended distance, and range capability.

Service details

What bore sighting may include.

The available method depends on firearm design, bore access, caliber, optic, and current tools.

01

Setup intake

Confirm firearm, optic, mount, caliber, intended zero distance, and recent changes.

02

Mount review

Check that the optic and accessible mounting components are suitable to align.

03

Method selection

Use an appropriate available bore-alignment method for the platform.

04

Preliminary alignment

Adjust the sighting system to an initial relationship with the bore axis.

05

Zero plan

Explain ammunition, target, distance, and live-fire confirmation still required.

Align, then verify

Every bore-sight service should end with a range plan.

The value is not a claim of zero—it is a more organized first group and clearer adjustment path.

01 / Confirm

Review optic mounting

Ensure the sighting system is secure enough for meaningful alignment.

02 / Align

Establish a starting reference

Relate the bore axis and optic using the appropriate available method.

03 / Document

Set expectations

Explain the preliminary nature of the result and intended starting distance.

04 / Verify

Complete live-fire zero

Use appropriate ammunition and target feedback to confirm final impact.

Know the difference

Bore sighting or live-fire zeroing?

One aligns without ammunition. The other measures actual impacts and makes evidence-based adjustments.

Bore sighting

Preliminary alignment

  • No ammunition fired
  • Creates starting reference
  • Cannot confirm trajectory
  • Follow-up still required

Before you visit

Bore sighting FAQs.

Call with firearm, caliber, optic, mount, and intended zero distance so the team can confirm the available method.

Is a bore-sighted rifle zeroed?+

No. Bore sighting is only preliminary alignment. Final point of impact must be confirmed with live ammunition.

At what distance is bore sighting performed?+

Method and available distance vary. The result is a starting reference, not a substitute for the intended final range distance.

Can every firearm be bore sighted?+

No. Design, bore access, caliber, optic, tools, and current service capability determine the available method.

Should the optic be mounted first?+

Yes. An unstable or incomplete mount makes alignment unreliable. Mounting service may be required first.

Will bore sighting save ammunition?+

It can reduce large initial error, but ammunition needs still depend on firearm, optic, shooter, distance, and adjustment process.
